Medical centre cleaning infection-control checklist

A practical starting point for GP, dental, pathology and allied-health practices building a documented, risk-based environmental cleaning programme in NSW.

Use it with your practice’s clinical advice

This operational checklist is not clinical or accreditation advice. Adapt it through a local risk assessment and your infection-prevention lead. Follow current product labels and any directions from NSW Health, your regulator or public-health unit.

1. Assign risk and responsibility

  • Name the practice lead who approves the cleaning policy, products and corrective actions.
  • Map clinical, non-clinical and staff-only zones; assign cleaning frequencies from a local risk assessment.
  • Separate the contractor’s environmental-cleaning scope from clinical equipment reprocessing and clinical waste duties.
  • Document the escalation path for spills, suspected infectious cases, outbreaks and damaged surfaces.

2. Specify the process and products

  • Use routine detergent cleaning unless the practice risk assessment, local procedure or public-health advice requires disinfection.
  • When disinfection is required, clean visible soil first and follow the product label for dilution, compatibility and contact time.
  • Keep a current chemical register, Safety Data Sheets and manufacturer instructions accessible to workers.
  • Use colour-coded, clean equipment and prevent cloths, mops and solutions moving from higher-risk to cleaner zones.

3. Cover every high-touch point

  • Include door handles, reception counters, check-in screens, chairs, light switches and accessible call buttons.
  • List consult-room desks, exam couches, trolley handles, taps, basins and non-critical shared equipment approved for cleaner handling.
  • Schedule patient and staff toilets, hand-wash areas, kitchens and waste points by use and risk—not by room size alone.
  • Add floors, walls, vents and high surfaces at an appropriate periodic frequency.

4. Protect people during the work

  • Train workers in hand hygiene, PPE selection, spill response, chemical safety and site-specific precautions.
  • Never mix chemicals; use labelled containers and store products away from patients, medicines and food.
  • Use wet-floor controls, safe cable placement and after-hours access procedures.
  • Keep sharps and reusable clinical-device reprocessing with appropriately trained clinical personnel unless the contract explicitly and safely assigns them.

5. Record, audit and improve

  • Use a dated checklist that identifies the worker, rooms completed, exceptions and corrective action.
  • Inspect technique and outcomes periodically; do not rely only on a signed attendance sheet.
  • Review complaints, incidents, missed tasks and infection-risk changes with the cleaning provider.
  • Reapprove the scope after renovations, new equipment, service changes or updated public-health advice.

What the cleaning handover should contain

Keep the approved room schedule, task frequencies, product register, Safety Data Sheets, colour-code plan, access instructions, spill escalation contacts, induction records and latest audit actions in one controlled pack. Give the cleaner only the responsibilities they are trained and contracted to perform.

Official guidance to review

The Australian Commission’s current infection-prevention guidelines require settings to apply a local risk assessment. NSW’s Clinical Excellence Commission provides the environmental-cleaning policy, procedures, frequencies and audit resources used across NSW Health facilities. These sources are the right place to check for updates before changing a practice procedure.
